n government said Sunday it has put the armed forces on high alert following an alleged plot to overthrow it and to assassinate leaders.
Home Affairs Minister Lackson Mapushi told journalists that the country' s police authorities have set up investigative wings to expedite probe in the planned coup.
Mapushi said President Levy Mwanawasa, in his capacity as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, has issued a directive that the Zambia Army, the Zambia Police Service, the Zambia National Service, the Office of the President and other relevant wings be on red alert to ensure total security.
He assured the law would soon take its course on the people involved because an investigation had been intensified.
Mwanawasa revealed on Friday some people were planning to topple him and assassinate him. The Zambian president also revealed some senior government leaders were targeted in the assassination plot.
Mwanawasa has since banned cadres of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) from seeing him off or receiving him at the Lusaka International Airport as a security measure.
