A gang of about 10 hooded gunmen linked to an Islamic separatist group stormed a military facility in Narathiwat, 1,200 kilometers south from Bangkok, shooting and injuring a guard before making off with two assault rifles and ammunition, the Bangkok Post reported Monday.

The intruders Saturday night broke into the Munoh livestock andagricultural coordination center, which is also a sub-base of the Fourth Development Battalion, carrying M16 and AK47 assault rifles.

A guard, Virote Thongkong, was tied up and held at gunpoint while the gang stole two M16 rifles, six magazines of ammunition and a radio transceiver.

He suffered bullet wounds to his right hip and arm when the gunmen opened fire on the outside of the building before making their escape, the report said.

The report also supposed a group of seven suspected terrorists linked with the raid, because according to an intelligence report, they were spotted in Pangkalamgubo village of Malaysia's Kelantan state on Friday morning and prepared for an operation near the Thai-Malaysian border.

The group was reportedly led by Ma Daeng, a close aide of Awae Kaelae, the head of the Guragan Mujahideen Islam Pattani group.

The group was expected to be planning further attacks in an attempt to gain credibility from international terrorist organizations.

On June 20, hooded gunmen stole 33 guns and ammunition from Bang Lang national park office in nearby Yala province, 1,100 kilometers south of Bangkok.
