At least eight Israeli tanks and armored vehicles and one bulldozer after midnight entered the Palestinian town of Rafah near the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel, Palestinian security sources reported.

The sources said that the Israeli army vehicles accompanied by infantry troops drove about 300 meters deep into the Al Barazil neighborhood in the town, and were stationed in one of the streets in the neighborhood.

They reported intensive Israeli gunfire and the explosion of percussion bombs in the neighborhood, but said there were no injuries.

Of the 1.4 million Palestinians residing in the Gaza Strip, the majority are refugees living in poor conditions. They have been under the Israeli closure since October 2000.

The enclave of 360 square kilometers is currently divided into three isolated slices by Israeli troops to strict the movement of Palestinians.

The closure deprived more than 40,000 Palestinian workers from their jobs in Israel.

Thousands of unemployed Palestinian workers who lost their jobs in Israel are planning to stage a popular demonstration on Monday morning to urge Israel to open the border for their jobs.

However, Palestinian sources said that the demonstration is alsoaimed to show displeasure with the Palestinian National Authority for failing to find job opportunities for the unemployed.

Unemployment in the Gaza Strip has reached over than 50 percent, nearly the same as the situation in the West Bank being under Israeli curfew for 12 days.
