36 Confirmed Dead in Shanxi Gold Mine Explosion

Su Hao, director of Xinzhou city public security department as well as an official responsible for investigating the death toll of the June 22 mine accident, said that so far 36 remains of the 40 miners believed (including four cremated) to have been working underground when the explosion blasted the Yixingzhai Gold Mine inFanzhi county, had been found.

The 20 bodies were buried separately at four sites, he said. On Sunday evening, 14 bodies believed hidden by the owner of the minewere discovered.

The police said they had been tipped off over a hiding place ofother bodies and excavations would soon start.

Previous reports from the mine owner said that only two people had been killed and four injured and 34 others had escaped the blast.

At edition time, the mine owner and foremen are still at large and the 36 bodies are held properly at four local hospitals, and the police are going all out to pursue them.

According to a late decision by the investigation group from the high-ups, the whole Fanshi gold mine had been shut down yesterday. Over 200 law enforcement personnel have been sent and are conducting a household-to-household investigation throughout the mining area. Over 4,000 migrant miners are making preparations under unified arrangement to go on their way back home.

Liu Jiliang, deputy secretary of CPC Fanchi County Party Committee told that the other day night the county government had issued a circular all ground structures and over 30 mines be demolished. Deputy county chief Wang Junsheng said that this is the most resolute move having ever been taken in solving the problem of ill mining in Fanchi County.

Apart from a thorough demolition of ground structures and mines opened no mountain roads would remain in the mining area to guarantee no mines to be opened in the place in the future. To this end, as reported, six bulldozers have been used and a thorough job of this will be done just in two days in the area.
