Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Vice President Teofisto Guingona are scheduled to meet shortly to thresh out their remaining differences, House Speaker Jose de Venecia said Monday.

"If it has not yet been resolved, I think there will be opportunities for them to meet today, tomorrow or the next few days. I am sure of that," de Venecia was quoted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer as saying.

"I believe it will be a most constructive discussion and it would lead to a solution of this problem -- largely a media problem," he added.

He said Arroyo and Guingona had already patched up their differences two hours before Guingona's speech last Thursday at the Manila Overseas Press Club, but newspaper reports that came out the following day made it seem like there was a continuing problem.

Presidential spokesman Silvestre Afable said earlier Monday Guingona could give up his post as foreign secretary before Congress resumes session on July 22.

But Guingona refused to comment on Afable's announcement.

Last Thursday, Afable released a letter signed by Arroyo to accept Guingona's resignation.

But Guingona, who opposes the presence of U.S. troops in the southern Philippines, insisted he would not resign, forcing the Presidential Palace to retract and declare that the vice presidentwas retaining his cabinet post.
