Two Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers left for the Arabian Sea on Monday morning to replace two logistical-support vessels for the U.S.-led military campaign against terrorism.

According to Japan's Kyodo News, the two vessels are the 4,550-ton Inazuma from Kure port, Hiroshima Prefecture, and the 3,850-ton Asakaze from Sasebo port, Nagasaki Prefecture.

The ships carry a total of 440 personnel and will support the supply ship Hamana. They will replace the current two logistical-support vessels in early August.

Another destroyer, the Sawakaze, has already left the Arabian Sea after completing its mission, and will return to Sasebo port on Friday.

The ships are being dispatched under a special anti-terrorism law enacted last October in the wake of the September 11 terroristattacks in the United States. Japan decided in May to extend the six-month missions in the Arabian Sea and other areas to November 19.
