Residents of Nanattan town in northern Sri Lanka's Mannar district staged a protest Monday against the alleged army for assaulting a local trader.

The town, some 310 kilometers northeast of capital Colombo, ground to a halt with shops and offices closed and public transport brought to standstill.

Military officials in Colombo said that service commanders in the area have been asked to cooperate with the police and the military police for investigations.

Local residents said that the army had assaulted a trader who was involved in a personal dispute between two local traders.

The protest in Mannar followed last week's inter-communal clashes in the east of the country between Tamil and Muslim communities.

A curfew was imposed in the east to prevent clashes which have left 11 dead and over 150 injured. The situation there has been brought under control after the army was called in.
