Despite the bolstered security in U.S. airports after the September 11 terror attacks, a report released on Monday said huge loopholes still exist in airport security as screeners fail to detect an average 24 percent of fake weapons.

The report was issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has taken over the checkpoint screening in airports from private companies in February.

During the undercover tests in 32 of U.S. largest airports, TSA investigators found that screeners repeatedly failed to find stainless steel test pieces and had trouble spotting simulated bombs. The agents said they even did little to try to conceal the items when passing them through checkpoints.

The report said that screeners in Cincinnati, Jacksonville and Las Vegas failed to detect the fake weapons in at least half the tests, while the Los Angeles International Airport had a 41 percent failure rate.

The TSA is reportedly in the process of hiring baggage screeners to serve in its new federal airport security force at 429 U.S. airports. It aims to complete the conversion from privatesecurity companies by November 19, the deadline set in post September 11 legislation mandating the changeover.

Newly hired workers will receive 44 hours of classroom trainingand 60 hours of on-the-job training.
