A milestone was reached in Sri Lanka's medical history Monday with the birth of a test tube baby, and the entire process was handled by local experts, local media reported on Tuesday.

Earlier such operations were performed with the assistance of medical experts from Britain.

Professor H.R. Seneviratne who led the team of doctors said they had been planning the process from last September and on Monday a healthy baby girl weighing 3.5 kilograms was delivered bycesarian surgery at the Durdans hospital.

The cost of the process will be about 300,000 rupees (about 3,125 U.S. dollars) unless there were complications. Seneviratne added that the age of the woman mattered and the younger she was the better it would be.

Several couples from the provinces had shown interest in the procedure and visited their medical center seeking similar treatment.

The center provides facilities for reproductive health and management of infertility.
