An Indonesia bus packed with children heading to the beach fell into a ravine Tuesday, killing 26 people and injuring many others, the state news agency Antara reported.

The driver lost control of the bus after it blew a tire, police said.

Many of the victims were children under the age of 7, the Antara report said. The injured were taken to three nearby hospitals.

The accident happened on a winding stretch of road close to Jember town in East Java, about 540 miles east of Jakarta.

The bus was taking the children to a beach resort, the report said.

Authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Fatal road accidents involving buses are common on Indonesia's roads. Many of the vehicles are rarely serviced, and roads are in poor condition.
