Chinese Defense Minister Meets East Timor Guests

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met in Beijing Tuesday with Taur Matan Ruak, commander of the armed forces of East Timor, and his party.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met in Beijing Tuesday with Taur Matan Ruak, commander of the armed forces of East Timor, and his party.

Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, cited China and East Timor as good neighbors which have cooperated well in political, trade and economic fieldsin recent years.

China congratulated East Timor on gaining its independence in May this year and was ready to develop good-neighborly relations with it on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence, he said.

East Timor's armed forces are facing many difficulties and challenges as their country is new born, he noted, and China wouldgive support within its capabilities to help the building of East Timor's army, and develop the friendly relations between the two countries' armed forces.

On the Taiwan issue, Chi said, China consistently adheres to "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems", and the eight-point proposals set forth by President Jiang Zemin in dealing with the issue.

The government of East Timor pledged its support to China's principled stance on Taiwan issue in the joint communique on forging his diplomatic ties with China, and China appreciated that,said Chi.

Ruak said China has rendered great help to the reconstruction of East Timor, and that he has come to promote cooperation betweenthe two countries and their armed forces and to learn from its experience. And he hoped that China would continue to support EastTimor in its reconstruction.

Meanwhile, he reaffirmed East Timor's support to the one-China policy and China's guidelines on the Taiwan issue.
