China, East Timor to Boost Military Ties

China will firmly support building an East Timor army and develop friendly ties with its armed forces,Fu Quanyou, chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said Tuesday in Beijing.

China will firmly support building an East Timor army and develop friendly ties with its armed forces,Fu Quanyou, chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said Tuesday in Beijing.

He told the visiting commander of the armed forces of East Timor, Taur Matan Ruak, that he was pleased to talk with the leader of "the world's youngest military force". East Timor becameindependent in May.

Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, said thatthe PLA valued ties with East Timor's armed forces, which needed help from the international community.

He voiced confidence in East Timor's government and armed forces in overcoming difficulties and developing a suitable defense capability.

"We hope to see the armed forces of East Timor playing a role in safeguarding the nation's security and regional peace."

Fu reaffirmed Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue.

Ruak said the first visit to China by East Timorese military since the country became independent demonstrated his country's desire to develop friendly ties with China.

He expressed gratitude for China's role in East Timor's independence process, and for sending civil police for peace-keeping operation.

He hoped that China and the international community would continue to help East Timor rebuild its government and military forces.
