NATO Supreme Commander Discharged

The Defense Planning Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said here on Tuesday that it had agreed to a request from U.S. President George W. Bush to release William Kernan from his responsibilities as Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.

The Defense Planning Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said here on Tuesday that it had agreed to a request from U.S. President George W. Bush to release William Kernan from his responsibilities as Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.

A press release from NATO said that the committee agreed to his request with great regret, and expressed its deep and lasting gratitude to General Kernan for his distinguished service during his term on the post.

The committee also agreed to consider to the proposal that the post would remain vacant for the time being and the deputy commander would assume the responsibility for day-to-day operations on an interim basis.

The committee is normally composed of permanent representativesbut meets at the level of defense ministers at least twice a year.It deals with most defense matters and subjects related to collective defense planning.
