Mahathir Announces His Successor for First Time

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Wednesday announced for the first time that he has appointed his deputy Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as his successor.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Wednesday announced for the first time that he has appointed his deputy Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as his successor.

Mahathir made the announcement on his return here from vacation in Europe.

Mahathir was given a rousing welcome at the military airport here Wednesday morning.

The prime minister, who was accompanied by his wife Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, was greetedd by people from all walks of life headed by Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Cabinet Ministers and community leaders.

Mahathir's return was eagerly awaited following his surprise announcement at the end of the General Assembly of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) on June 22 that he wished to step down.

Mahathir will remain as prime minister till October 2003, UMNO secretary general Khalil Yaakob announced in Kuala Lumpur June 25 after a special meeting of the UMNO Supreme Council.

Mahathir will relinquish all his posts in the government and the party after the summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference in October 2003.
