U.S. firefighters on Tuesday finally stopped the spread of the wildfire in Colorado after 24 days of burning, a local fire official announced.
"It's a point and we can say we crossed it. We all breathe a sign of relief," Colorado fire information officer Tom Lavagnino said.
The wildfire, which has burned 137,760 acres (about 558 million square meters) of forest, is the largest one in the history of Colorado state.
Starting some 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Denver, the blaze was declared fully contained at 6 p.m. local time. It once raged to within 10 miles (16.09 kilometers ) of the suburb of the city and destroyed 135 homes.
Terry Barton, a former Forest Service employee, was charged with igniting the fire on June 8, but she pleaded innocent to four federal charges, including arson.
Barton told investigators that the fire started accidentally when she was burning a letter from her estranged husband.
