Singapore Objects Taiwan's Accession to WTO Agreement

Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) Tuesday reiterated its objection to Taiwan's accession to the WTO Government Procurement Agreement (GPA) because Taiwan discriminated against Singapore.

The MTI made the point in a response to an article carried last Friday by Taipei Times, which insinuated that Singapore had blocked Taiwan's accession to the GPA in February 2002 because of pressure from the Chinese mainland.

Rejecting the claim in the article, the MTI said that Taiwan has made discrimination against Singapore by offering some of its concessions under the GPA only to the U.S., EC, Japan, South Korea,Switzerland, Canada, Hong Kong of China, Norway and Iceland, excluding Singapore and some other GPA members from the list of its concession grants.

"Moreover, Chinese Taipei, as an acceding member to the GPA, had not adequately addressed all our concerns and requests," the MTI stated, adding "Once our demands are met, Singapore will support Chinese Taipei's bid to join the GPA."

"The blatant discrimination against Singapore left us with no choice but to exercise our rights as a GPA member to safeguard our interests," the MTI reaffirmed.
