A number of well-known Indonesian shuttlers and some retired players proposed that President Megawati Soekarnoputri revoke the ruling for Indonesians of Chinese descent to possess the Republic of Indonesia Citizenship Certificate (SBKRI).

"We will meet the President in July to submit the proposal, God willing", ex-player Ferry Sonneville was quoted by the Jakarta-based Bisnis Indonesia Daily on Wednesday.

"For us, this is the right time to abolish discrimination against the citizens of Chinese descent because until today we are obliged to possess SBKRI to arrange matters, like passport," he added.

Ferry and some 40 players signed the proposal to be submitted to the president.

"On behalf of law enforcement and the efforts to end discrimination among all Indonesian citizens, we, the Indonesian Badminton Community, with all sincerity and honesty, request Madame President to revoke the Republic of Indonesia Citizenship Certificate for the citizens of Chinese descent," the letter said.

Among those players are Hendrawan, Chandra Wijaya, Halim Haryanto as well as former world's number one players such as Rudy Hartono, Liem Swie King, Tan Joe Hok, and Susi Susanti.

Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra on June 21 reiterated in an interview with local newspaper that the ministry would not issue SBKRI for Indonesians of Chinese descent on the ground that such a requirement could be considered as a discriminative policy.

Despite Mahendra's confirmation, it was reported that several offices still required SBKRI, including the migration office that is under the authority of the ministry of justice. The South Jakarta Migration Office firmly demands Indonesians of Chinese descent to show SBKRI before obtaining passports.
