Former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori will be operated on for prostate cancer after returning from a visit to China this week, an aide said Tuesday.

Mori, 64, told a meeting of his political faction that he will be hospitalized in Tokyo about July 11, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Japanese media reported Tuesday that Mori has been receiving hormone therapy since April of 2000, when doctors suspected he had prostate cancer.

The aide said Mori will depart for Beijing on Wednesday to make a speech at a Sino-Japanese business forum in the Chinese capital. He is scheduled to return home Friday.
