Thai Police Seize Weapons Suspectedly Being Shipped to S.Lankan Rebels

Thai police seized weapons which were believed to be shipped to Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebels in Phuket island, 700 kilometers south from Bangkok, and arrested a suspect, Thai officials said Wednesday.

Thai police seized weapons which were believed to be shipped to Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebels in Phuket island, 700 kilometers south from Bangkok, and arrested a suspect, Thai officials said Wednesday.

Police Col. Praween Phonsirin said that the captured weapons were being transported in a truck when it was intercepted by police on a seaside road in Phuket.

The suspect told police that the weapons, which included six rocket launchers, grenades, and automatic rifle bullets, would be sent to a rebel group in Asia, Praween said, adding that the origin of the weapons was not known

According to Phongphayom, provincial governor of Phuket, the seized weapons were likely destined for the Tamil rebels of Sri Lanka.
