Five people returning from a political rally, among them a 101-year-old man, were ambushed and shot to death in western Mexico, officials said Wednesday.

The attack in Huajicori, in Nayarit state, apparently stemmed from a decade-long dispute over land, state authorities said Wednesday.

Men armed with automatic weapons waited along a mountain road Sunday night and ambushed a truck carrying people from a rally for the mayoral candidate of President Vicente Fox's National Action Party, authorities said.

Five people were killed in the 7 p.m. attack, including 101-year-old Felipe Aguilar Hernandez. Six others were wounded.

One suspect was arrested and police were seeking two others, Banuelos said.

Ten hours after the ambush, gunmen shot Domingo Alvarez Barraza, 38, to death when he went to investigate noises at a local store.

Alvarez was the brother of the Institutional Revolutionary Party mayor for Huajicori, which is located some 445 miles northwest of Mexico City.

With local elections scheduled for Sunday, some initial speculation had focused on a possible political motive, but state authorities ruled out politics or drugs as a motive.
