A plane carrying United States government aid for earthquake victims landed in Iran Tuesday in a rare gesture by Washington to a country it has branded a member of the "axis of evil."

President Bush's offer of aid and Iran's decision to accept it have raised hope of an easing of tensions. The countries do not have diplomatic ties. Unicef was charged with delivering the $300,000 in aid, and no Americans were on the plane, a Unicef spokesman said.

The quake in northern Iran on June 22 killed 235 people.
