Shanghai General Electronics and Australian communications giant Telstra on July 1 signed an intention agreement for setting up a joint venture in China, this marks another step for foreign telecom providers to enter Chinese telecom market after China joins the WTO.

According Liberation Daily, as announced, the joint venture will tap China's telecom value-added service market based on the partners' strengths.

So far, Shanghai General Electronics is shifting its strategies from pure manufacturing to a service-manufacturing integrated industrial type.

According to report, Telstra's sales revenue for the year 2001 reached 2.3 billion Australian dollars, ranking it in the 49th place among world telecom providers.

The planned joint venture will provide Shanghai customers with value-added services such as e-mail, voice-mail, online information and data search, electric data exchange, online information and data processing services, etc.

Insiders say that the new joint venture may probably play an important role in competing with other telecom providers for the 2008 Olympics.
