The DPRK made a call Monday for the removal of the statue of the late U.S. Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) from the Freedom Park in Incheon, South Korea.

Calling the general, who served as commander-in-chief of the U.N. forces during the early days of the Korean War (1950-53), "an unrivaled war enthusiast," Radio Pyongyang claimed that he is also "a nuclear enthusiast who even advocated the use of atomic bombs to exterminate the Korean people."

Radio Pyongyang also said that Japan's militarist inclination today stems from his policy of keeping Japan's imperial household intact, instead of removing it, at the close of World War II.

The resurrected militarism of Japan today poses a great threat to the peace and safety of not only Asia, but also of the whole world, it added.

The status of a soldier with such a disgraceful history standing in Incheon's Freedom Park is "a shame on the Korean people."
