A big fire broke out in a filling station in the Rosafa area in the southeastern part of the Iraqi capital on Thursday morning and heavy smokes could be seen billowing into the sky.

A witness said that the fire broke out at about 10 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) and he heard a big explosion.

This is no doubt the biggest fire in Baghdad in recent years as heavy smokes can be seen from afar and have darkened part of the sky over the Iraqi capital.

"I think this is an accident rather than a terrorist attack," antaxi driver said.

No other details were immediately available and there is still no comment from the Iraqi government.

According to U.S. media reports, U.S. President George W. Bush has authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to engage in covert activities to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and possibly assassinate him.
