Typhoon Disrupts Air, Road Traffic, Cuts Power in NE Japan

A large, powerful typhoon was headingfor Kumejima Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Northeast Japan, on Thursday, causing power cuts and cancellation of most airline flights.

A large, powerful typhoon was headingfor Kumejima Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Northeast Japan, on Thursday, causing power cuts and cancellation of most airline flights.

Typhoon Ramasun, packing winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour,was about 220 kilometers west-northwest of Kumejima Island as of 9a.m. and bringing winds of more than 72 kph to Okinawa Island and the Sakishima Islands, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Most of the scheduled flights linking Naha airport and other airports in Okinawa Prefecture with Tokyo, Osaka and other destinations were canceled, local airlines officials said.

Bus services in Naha, the prefectural capital, came to a complete standstill.

All elementary and junior and high schools in Okinawa canceled morning classes, and some 10,000 households in Okinawa were without electricity due to the typhoon, according to prefectural officials.

By Friday morning, the typhoon may dump up to 200 millimeters of rain in Okinawa, the agency said.
