Premier Zhu Meets Kiribati President

China-Kiribati reciprocal cooperation on an equal footing and the friendship between the twopeoples are bound to advance in the new century, said Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at a meeting in Beijing on Thursday with visiting President of Kiribati Teburoro Tito.

China-Kiribati reciprocal cooperation on an equal footing and the friendship between the twopeoples are bound to advance in the new century, said Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at a meeting in Beijing on Thursday with visiting President of Kiribati Teburoro Tito.

Zhu spoke positively of the role of Tito's current visit to China in boosting bilateral relations.

He said that since China and Kiribati set up diplomatic ties 22years ago, bilateral relations had progressed smoothly with frequent bilateral high-level contacts, steady growth in cooperation in such fields as economics, trade, culture, education,health, sports and space science, and strengthening cooperation ininternational and regional affairs.

Zhu voiced his satisfaction with the social and economic benefits of the Chinese government's assistance to Kiribati.

He stressed that the Chinese government would work with Kiribati to implement the consensus reached between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Tito.

Zhu also expressed his appreciation for the Kiribati government's "one-China" policy.

Tito, who is on a six-day working visit to China as Jiang's guest, expressed his thanks for China's assistance and support forKiribati in the past 22 years, and his satisfaction with the soundgrowth of bilateral relations, strengthening economic and trade cooperation and the achievements made during this visit.

He said he would take back the Chinese people's friendship for the Kiribati people.

He also noted that Kiribati would strengthen cooperation with China within the framework of the Pacific Islands Forum.
