Chinese Vice-premier Meets Israeli Guests

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met in Beijing Thursday with a delegation from the Foreign Affairsand Defense Committee of the Israeli Knesset headed by the committee's chairman David Magen.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met in Beijing Thursday with a delegation from the Foreign Affairsand Defense Committee of the Israeli Knesset headed by the committee's chairman David Magen.

Qian said the Chinese and the Israelis have a time-honored friendship, and their friendly and cooperative relations have developed rapidly in the short time since they forged diplomatic ties. They have exchanged frequent high-level visits which have borne fruit.

Touching on the Middle East situation, Qian said China has shown ongoing concern about the issue and worries about the escalating tension there.

China opposes and condemns violent actions targeting civilians,and also disapproves of Israel's use of force against the Palestinian area, Qian said, adding that China sincerely hopes thetwo sides will solve their disputes through peaceful negotiations.

Magen expressed appreciation for China's efforts towards world peace and called for China to play a bigger role in Middle East affairs.
