Pinochet Presents Resignation as Chile's Life-Senator

The former military ruler of Chile,Augusto Pinochet, presented his resignation to Congress on Thursday as lifetime Senator, which he has been since he left power in 1990.

The former military ruler of Chile,Augusto Pinochet, presented his resignation to Congress on Thursday as lifetime Senator, which he has been since he left power in 1990.

Pinochet, 86, formalized his resignation through a letter addressed to Senate President Andres Zaldivar, who will issue a declaration on the matter in the coming hours.

Last Monday, the Chile Supreme Court issued a stay to the Pinochet case in the Death Caravan case with the argument that theretired general suffers from "incurable dementia".

In the process, Pinochet was accused of being involved in the murder of 75 members of the political opposition by the military in various cities throughout the country in the first days after the military regime.

On June 5, 2000, Pinochet was stripped of his special privileges by the Santiago Court of Appeals.

Pinochet is the last survivor of the military junta ruling Chile from 1973 through 1990. He headed the coup d'etat in which left-wing constitutional President Salvador Allende was killed on September 11, 1973.
