China launches US-sponsored anti-HIV program

An anti-HIV/AIDS research program sponsored by the United States health authorities was launched last week in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, northwest China.

An anti-HIV/AIDS research program sponsored by the United States health authorities was launched last week in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, northwest China.

A total of 500 intravenous drug addicts who are not HIV carriers will be chosen to take part in the trial, by taking a certain medicine as a preventive measure, according to sources with the local public health department.

The program involves an investment of one million US dollars and equipment worth 400,000 dollars for the first year.

The program is also carried out in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, south China.
