Indian minister sentenced to 3 years imprisonment

Former Communications Minister Sukh Ram was convicted Friday and sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of 200,000 rupees (4,124 US dollars) by a Delhi Court.

Former Communications Minister Sukh Ram was convicted Friday and sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of 200,000 rupees (4,124 US dollars) by a Delhi Court.

The court found him guilty of causing a loss of about 16.8 million rupees (346,300 dollars) to the government in the award ofa telecom equipment contract to a private firm.

Special Judge V.K. Jain sentenced Sukh Ram to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of 100,000 rupees (2,062 dollars) on finding him guilty for being part of the criminal conspiracy todefraud the exchequer by awarding the contract to M/S Advanced Radio Ltd of Bangalore which had supplied inferior equipment at a higher rate in 1993-1994.

The Judge also convicted Sukh Ram for the substantive offense under Section 13(2)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) and sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fineof 100,000 rupees (2,062 dollars).

The sentences would run concurrently, the Judge said. The Courtalso convicted former Deputy Director General in the department ofTelecom Runu Ghosh and managing director of the private firm M/S Advanced Radio Ltd, P. Ramarao.

While Ghosh was sentenced to two years imprisonment with a fineof 50,000 rupees (1,031 dollars) for her offense to be part of thecriminal conspiracy, Ramarao was sentenced to three years rigorousimprisonment and a fine of 200,000 rupees (4,124 dollars).

However, all the accused were allowed time till Aug. 5 to appeal against the order and were granted bail subject to their furnishing a bail bond of 100,000 rupees (2,062 dollars) with a surety each.
