Early reports said that eight died on the spot when the wall fell, but another five also died afterwards in hospital, local sources said.

The remaining 15 injured are still in hospital for treatment, their conditions not known yet.

The accident took place around 9:15 when workers were demolishing the wall for a road extension project.

The victims include vegetable vendors, construction workers and passers-by.

Major Party and government leaders of the city have rushed to the site to organize the rescue work. Torrential rains that had hit the city since Friday night was blamed for causing the collapse of the wall.
