Taiwan Women Active in Volunteer Work

Taiwan women are more willing to do volunteer work than men, with female volunteers outnumbering males by 70 percent to 30 percent, said a report from Taipei Saturday.

Taiwan women are more willing to do volunteer work than men, with female volunteers outnumbering males by 70 percent to 30 percent, said a report from Taipei Saturday.

A local authority was quoted as saying that as of the end of 2001, the number of volunteers in the island totaled 58,310, up 3.34 percent from the previous year. Of which, women accounted for more than 40,000, or 70.3 percent, while men accounted for more than 17,000, or 29.7 percent.

The volunteers worked up to 5.65 million hours a year, averaging two hours per week for every volunteer, the authority said.

In terms of age group, the 30-49 group accounted for the majority 44 percent of the total, while in terms of occupation, housewives accounted for the largest proportion, followed by thosein the trade and industrial sectors.

In terms of academic backgrounds, those who have received senior high school education accounted for the most, followed by those who have received college education.
