Poverty-ridden Prefecture Becomes City
Guyuan Prefecture in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was given city status by the central government on Saturday.

Ningxia
Hui Autonomous Region was given city status by the central government on Saturday.
Guyuan, where a great number of ethnic Muslims live, is situated in the southern mountainous part of Ningxia and is one ofthe poorest areas in the country.
Five of the now defunct Guyuan prefecture's counties will retain their former status under the new city, while another county bearing the same name as the new city will become a district of it, said local sources.
With a population of 1.8 million, Guyuan City is singular place.People lived there 5,000 years ago. It was the county seat of seven ancient Chinese dynasties and an important stopping place onthe ancient Silk Road.
China had 668 cities in 1997 and an urban population of 369.89 million
