The ASEAN economic ministers informal meeting Saturday achieved several breakthroughs includingapplication of the 10-X principle to accelerate some of ASEAN work programs.

At a late press conference at Genting Highlands Resort where the meeting is held , Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry Rafidah Aziz said that the 10-X principle would allowsome of the ASEAN programs to come forward much earlier without getting the full consensus from all members.

Another significant achievement is to consider extending national incentives to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) joint-venture with ASEAN equity participation, as an effort to increase the vitality of SMEs, she said.

Rafidah said that the principle would also be adopted for the e-ASEAN initiatives, due to the different levels of development among ASEAN members, in order to bridge the digital divide.

The ministers also agreed to push forward cooperation in the areas of intellectual properties which they said is the key to attracting foreign direct investments into the region, according to the minister.

Six ministers from the ten-nation grouping are attending the meeting which will end Sunday.
