Romania Hopes for Closer Cooperation with China: President

Romanian President Ion Iliescu stressed in Bucharest on Monday that his country hopes to further enhance cooperation with China in various fields.

Romanian President Ion Iliescu stressed in Bucharest on Monday that his country hopes to further enhance cooperation with China in various fields.

At a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, he said that frequent contacts between leaders of the two nations have promoted bilateral political ties and the two sides should, on this basis, further strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, science and technology, culture, and education.

Romania values China's role in safeguarding world peace and development and is ready to maintain the effective cooperation with China on international issues, Iliescu said.

Tang said China-Romania relations are time-tested and the two nations have enjoyed mutual benefit economic cooperation and supported each other in international affairs.

He praised Romania for its adherence to the one-China principle and its support for China's reunification cause.

Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase also held talks with Tang on Monday, during which they discussed the ways to materialize the consensus reached by the prime ministers of the two countries on further developing economic cooperation and trade.

On the same day, Tang and Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana signed a memorandum on mutual understanding and cooperation between by the two foreign ministries.

Tang arrived in the eastern European country last Friday for a four-day official visit.
