China has offered to purchase 200,000 tons of Thai jasmine or Hom Mali rice, the Thai commerce minister has said.

Thai Commerce Minister Adisai Bodharamik said on Monday that the Chinese government and private Chinese rice firms had confirmed to purchase Thai Hom Mali rice, totally accounting for 200,000 tons.

"The Ministry of Commerce is negotiating with the buyers on the price of rice shipment, which is expected to be no lower than the current price in the world market of 330 US dollars a ton," the Thai News Agency quoted the minister as reporting on Tuesday.

If everything is agreed, a rice deal will be signed between the Ministry of Commerce and the buyers, he added.

Adisai said it was likely that China would purchase more rice from Thailand later this year.

Thailand reportedly has overall Hom Mali rice stocks of one million tons, which will be sold both locally and internationally.
