Iran's English daily Tehran Times said on Tuesday Muslim countries should coordinate their efforts toward establishing a commonwealth of Islamic states.

Such an organization can help reverse the trend of rich countries exploiting the poor under current rules and regulations, the paper said, adding that it can also be an instrument of Muslim countries to defend the rights of Palestinians and thwart any US-Israeli conspiracy.

The paper said since the war on terror launched after the September 11 events has become the convenient ground for cooperation among countries, "Muslim countries should agree to establish a commonwealth of Islamic states," the daily said.

Greater unity among Muslim countries is not only needed in political affairs but also in economic terms, the paper said, adding that the creation of a commonwealth of Islamic countries will help protect common interests of all its member states.

The paper suggested that the proposed organization "have powers similar to the European Union but where member countries are able to maintain their independence and control of national affairs."

The organization can then pursue common objectives and interestsas all member countries are of the same faith, it said.
