The powerful Typhoon Chataan is likely to hit the Tokai and Kanto regions in eastern Japan on Wednesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said late Tuesday.

As of 9 p.m. (local time) Tuesday, the season's sixth typhoon, packing winds of 126 km per hour and traveling at about 15 km per hour, was about 320 km southeast of Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, the agency said.

The agency said the typhoon could hit the Tokai and Kanto regions in central and eastern Japan late Wednesday night after reaching south of Cape Muroto in the western Japan prefecture Kochi, it said.

Chataan, an extremely powerful typhoon, has an atmospheric pressure of 955 hectopascals at its center and is expected to gradually shift course in an easterly direction, according to the Meteorological Agency.

The agency has warned against downpours expected mainly in the areas facing the Pacific Ocean.

By early evening Wednesday, Mie Prefecture and the southern part of the Kinki region in western Japan will likely receive 250-300 millimeters of rain, the agency said.

Some places will also get an overall rainfall of more than 300 mm, it added.
