The number of jobless in Germany was3.95 million in June, or 7,900 more than in May, the Federal Bureau for Labor announced on Tuesday.

Last month's unemployment, which accounted for 9.5 percent of the total labor force, was the highest in June since 1998, and reversed the usually downward trend of unemployment in summer, thebureau said.

In the eastern states of Germany, the unemployment was 17.8 percent in June, more than double the 7.6 percent in the western states.

The seasonally adjusted figure of unemployment in Germany was 4.09 million in June, 39,000 more than in the previous month.

The latest figures will certainly add fuel to the political debate 10 weeks before the country's parliamentary election on September 22.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder noted on Tuesday that the labor market would be improving in the coming months as the economic recovery picks up, while his main challenger, Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber, called the figures "a document of the government's failure."
