Sri Lanka is to have its first 300 Megawatt coal fired power plant in the eastern harbor town of Trincomalee with private sector participation, according to the Power and Energy Ministry Wednesday.

The cabinet approved on Tuesday the proposal of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya for the plant to meet the increasing demand for power.

The decision for a coal power plant was taken 15 years ago. The site, however, was shifted from time to time through the years whenever there were public protests.

The electricity board estimates that with the establishment of the coal power plant the cost of production now at 6.50 rupees (about 6.7 US cents) per unit will drop to 2.13 rupees (about 2.2 US cents).

Sri Lanka which depends mainly on hydro power for its electricity supply has suffered an acute shortage of electricity in recent years when power cuts ranging from four to eight hours aday had to be introduced. Thermal power as a standby arrangement costs too much and coal fired plants have been advocated to meet future power shortages.
