Mekong River Commission Governments Meet in Phnom Penh

Government representatives from the four countries that comprise the Mekong River Commission (MRC) met in Phnom Penh Wednesday at the Hotel Inter-Continental.

Government representatives from the four countries that comprise the Mekong River Commission (MRC) met in Phnom Penh Wednesday at the Hotel Inter-Continental.

This is the 16th meeting of MRC's Joint Committee, an event that take place at least twice a year with representatives from Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Thailand and Vietnam.

In addition to reviewing presentations about MRC program implementation, Joint Committee members will be requested to endorse the draft preliminary procedures for notification, prior consultation and agreement on water utilization, which will be presented to MRC's council for final approval in October this year.

The meeting will also consider draft guidelines on custodianship and management of the MRC's information system, the draft inception report for the basin development plan and proposed new programs in the areas of fisheries and flood management and mitigation.

On Friday, the 6th dialogue meeting will be held between the MRC Joint Committee and representatives from Myanmar and China, according to a press release.

The MRC is an inter-government organization established in 1995 to promote and coordinate the sustainable management and development of the Mekong's water and related resources, for mutual benefit and the people's well-being of the countries in the region.
