Tropical storm Nakri hit Taiwan's western coast early Wednesday, dumping heavy rain that officials feared could trigger deadly flash flooding and mudslides.

Nakri, named after a Cambodian flower, whirled into the island just north of the west-central city of Taichung and was moving northeast toward Taipei, the Weather Bureau said. The storm defied forecasts that said it would hit southern Taiwan early Tuesday evening.

Officials closed Taichung's airport as the storm approached, packing surface winds of 39 mph. China Airlines canceled flights from the southern city of Kaohsiung to Manila, Philippines. The airport was also closed on the Penghu island chain, 36 miles off Taiwan's west-central coast.

Forecasters warned that the heavy rain could cause landslides or flash flooding in mountainous central regions, and they expected as much as 20 inches of rain in the next 24 hours. Several central cities and counties closed offices and schools.

Officials with loudspeakers drove through some towns in mountainous areas, urging residents to evacuate.
