Two Chinese naval ships arrived at the harbor of Lisbon on Wednesday, starting a first-ever visit to Portugal by warships of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The flotilla, composed of the guided missile destroyer Qingdao and the supply ship Taicang, is led by Ding Yiping, commander of the North China Sea Fleet.

The flotilla received a warm welcome from Portugal's military and local residents of Chinese origin.

The two warships, with more than 500 crew members aboard, are on a round-the-globe voyage, the first of its kind by the PLA Navy.

They have visited Singapore, Egypt, Turkey, Ukraine and Greece since they sailed out of Qingdao, a city in eastern China, on May 15.
