Malaysia's Federal Court Wednesday dismissed Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against the decision of the Court of Appeal to uphold the sentence imposed by the High Court three years ago.

The decision was delivered by Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah.

Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin said that the court was unanimous in its decision to dismiss former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar's appeal against his conviction and jail sentence imposed by the High Court on four counts of corrupt practice.

Anwar, who wore a neckbrace and lumbar support, was wheeled into the packed courtroom shortly before proceedings commenced.

On hearing the court's decision, Anwar started to protest in a loud voice, saying that he was the "victim of a political conspiracy."

The Court of Appeal, on April 29, 2000, upheld Anwar's conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court on April 14, 1999, for interfering in police investigations into allegations ofsexual misconduct against him.

Anwar, 54, was charged with directing former Special Branch Director Mohamed Said Awang and his deputy Amir Junus to get two people, Ummi Hafilda Ali and Azizan Abu Bakar, to retract their allegations of sodomy and adultery against him.

He was found guilty of committing the offenses between August 12 and August 27, 1997, and was sentenced to six years' imprisonment on each of the four counts of corrupt practice.

The High Court had ordered the jail terms to run concurrently from the date of sentence.

Anwar was represented by a team of lawyers led by Aziz Addruse while Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail led the prosecution team.

Anwar was sacked on September 2, 1998 and arrested on September20, the same year, under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for leading an anti-government demonstration before being charged for corrupt practice.

He is also serving a separate nine-year jail sentence for sodomy imposed by the High Court two years ago.
