Top Austrian leaders Wednesday hailed the smooth development of bilateral ties with China, while meeting visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan.

During their meeting with Tang, Austrian President Thomas Klestil, Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel and National Council (parliament) President Heinz Fischer expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral ties in recent years, and hope the two sides tap the potential in expanding cooperation in all fieldsin light of new situations.

Austria stands for multi-polarity, and attaches great significance to the important role China plays in international affairs, they told the Chinese minister, adding that the European Union (EU) enlargement and development will not affect the existing friendly cooperation between EU members, including Austria, and China.

Conveying Chinese President Jiang Zemin's regards to Klestil, Tang said he valued the development of Sino-Austrian relations. Atpresent, bilateral ties are moving forward smoothly, and last year, the two countries marked the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship.

Over the past three decades, especially in recent years, the two sides have frequently exchanged high-level visits and their trade and economic cooperation has shown a tendency for faster development with continuously rising trade turnover, Tang said.

Meanwhile, China has seen vigorous investment from Austrian enterprises and notable products of bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the aspects of culture, education, science and technology, Tang stressed.

Austria, located in Central Europe, plays a special role in European and international affairs, said Tang. Although the world and internal situations have changed a lot in recent years, China does not change its policy of valuing and enhancing friendly relations and cooperation with Austria.

Both countries share common or similar views on a lot of major international issues, so it is necessary for the two sides to further strengthen coordination and cooperation and make joint efforts to preserve the peace and development in the world, Tang said.

On the same day, Tang also held in-depth talks with his Austrian counterpart Benina Ferrero-Waldner on the issues of bilateral ties, anti-terror, the India-Pakistan conflict, and the EU eastward expansion.
