The Zambian president said Wednesday the newly-launched African Union (AU) has endorsed the decision by the Organization of African Unity not to recognize any of the two claimants to the Madagascar presidency.

Speaking on arrival from the launch of the AU in Durban, South Africa where he also handed over the chairmanship of the continental body to his counterpart and host President Thabo Mbaki, Levy Mwanawasa said the AU resolved it would recognize neither Marc Ravalomanana nor his opponent Didier Ratsika until constitutionally recognized elections are held in that country.

Meanwhile, Mwanawasa urged the women in Zambia to come forward and vie for seats at the AU's 15-member Security Council as it has been resolved that the council should constitute 50 percent of women as its human resource.

The Zambian president said the chances for Zambians to be appointed at the council, which would now be turned into a commission, are high due to the peace enjoyed by the country.
