The Sudan has once again extended the period granted to the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) to hunt for the Lord Resistance Army (LRA) rebels led by Joseph Kony in southern Sudan, the New Vision daily reported Thursday.

"We have been given more time. We are operating there legally,"said Chief of Military Intelligence Noble Mayombo.

Mayombo went to Khartoum last weekend to re-negotiate the extension with the Sudanese authorities. But, he did not give details about the extension.

This is the third extension since the Operation "Iron Fist" against the LRA rebels began in March.

The Sudan initially allowed the UPDF on its soil for a 30-day operation, which was later extended to May 19 and June 30 respectively. But both deadlines have not yielded the desired results of capturing or killing Kony and his forces believed to bescattered over Imatong hills in southern Sudan.

The LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have abducted over 10,000 children and displaced hundreds of thousands people in northern Uganda in the past 15 years.
