A total of 823 enterprises causing serious environmental pollution have been closed in a nationwide pollution-control campaign, authorities said Thursday.

Meanwhile 283 people responsible for the illegal discharge of pollutants have been investigated, said an official with the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).

Law enforcement staff at local environmental protection administrations have inspected more than 83,000 enterprises throughout the country since the SEPA launched the campaign in late May.

Pollution problems were found chemical plants, foundries, papermills, pharmaceutical companies and steel plants.

"In some cases the pollution has aroused strong complaints fromlocal residents and may harm people's health," said Tian Weiyong, director of a SEPA center for the investigation of pollution accidents.

Although the environmental protection departments have repeatedly ordered polluting enterprises to use treatment facilities, many ignored the orders, Tian said.

The SEPA and its local departments would continue the wide-ranging inspections in coming months. Enterprises with pollution problems will be ordered to deal with the problems within given deadlines, Tian said.
