In Latin America, 35.2 percent of AIDS patients are male homosexuals, experts noted in a book presented Thursday at the 14th International AIDS Conference.

In the book,"AIDS and Sex Among Men in Latin America: Vulnerabilities, Strengths and Proposals," the experts said that Latin America has the second largest number of AIDS cases among gay and bisexual men, only next to the United States.

Experts estimated that by the end of last year there were at least 1.82 million adults and children infected with the HIV virusin Latin America and the Caribbean.

According to the figures released by Peruvian epidemiologist Carlos Caceres, some 190,000 out of the known cases got infected last year.

A report, published by the Network for the Research of Sexualities and HIV/AIDS in Latin America, highlights that sexual transmission is the cause of at least 78 percent of HIV cases detected in Latin America, and male homosexual transmission accounted for more than half of the contagion. The report came outwith the support of the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS,

In the Andean area and Mexico where this sort of contamination prevails, 50 percent of the AIDS patients are homosexuals. Homosexuals also account for 36 percent of the known cases in the countries at the southern tip of South America and Brazil, and 10 percent to 12 percent in Central America and the Caribbean.
