Coastguards from Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, the United States and Venezuela Friday started military exercises code-named "Round Up," which were focusing on combating drugs and human trafficking.

According to Panama's National Maritime Service (SMN), participants will carry out repair and maintenance tasks in the first stage of the operation that started on Friday and will last until July 27.

The former naval base of Rodman, on the east shore of the Panama Canal, in the Pacific Ocean, will host the event, which draws 10 ships, including training vessel Gentian of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Through these maneuvers "it is sought to have a perfect operation in the 82-foot ships through joint training and the sharing of experiences by the participating countries," an SMN source said.
